Hotspring integrates Slapshot AI for automated VFX.

VFX Just Got a HUGE Upgrade: You Won’t Believe What Hotspring Did!

Hotspring, the VFX outsourcing platform, just upped its game. They’ve integrated Slapshot AI, their in-house tool designed to automate the drudgery – rotoscoping and frame generation – that sucks the joy out of visual effects work.

Slapshot: From Roto to… More?

Slapshot first appeared in 2024, initially focusing solely on rotoscoping. Now, Hotspring is rolling out frame generation capabilities. The promise? Speed and efficiency. Are we surprised? No. Is it welcome? Absolutely.

‘Enable AI’: A Button to (Potentially) Save Your Sanity

For Hotspring customers, accessing Slapshot is now a matter of clicking “enable AI” after uploading footage. The system automatically syncs, and the AI presumably does its thing. No extra charge, allegedly. The question isn’t just if it works, but how well it works under real-world production pressure. Anyone who’s wrangled AI-assisted tools knows the devil’s in the details – and the edge cases.

The Future of Slapshot: More Features Incoming (Maybe)

Hotspring’s roadmap includes plans to add more features to Slapshot. Jon Mason, CEO of both Hotspring and Slapshot, emphasized the platform’s flexibility. “Our goal is to make the latest advancements in AI accessible to creators in real-time, ensuring they can produce better content, faster.” Lofty ambitions, but the proof will be in the pudding (or, you know, the rendered frames).

Bridging the Gap… Or Widening It?

Ben Stallard, managing director, frames it as bridging the gap between traditional outsourcing and AI. “Our goal is to provide the best, most efficient solution for the VFX community, enabling clients to outsource material to Hotspring while having the ability to leverage AI to accelerate the process where needed.” This raises a critical question: does this integration truly benefit smaller studios and individual artists, or primarily advantage larger players who can afford the infrastructure and training to fully leverage AI-assisted workflows? The answer, as always, likely lies somewhere in the middle, coupled with individual proficiency.

The AI Arms Race Continues

Hotspring’s move highlights the ongoing AI arms race in VFX. Every studio, vendor, and freelancer is scrambling to integrate AI tools, hoping to gain a competitive edge. The real challenge isn’t just adopting the technology, but adapting workflows and retraining talent to effectively use it. And of course, keeping an eye on those robots.

Ultimately, Slapshot’s success will depend on its usability, reliability, and, crucially, its ability to genuinely improve the lives (and deadlines) of VFX artists. The future is here, and it’s got algorithms. Let’s hope they’re well-behaved.
