AI model transforms photos into 3D scenes.

AI Revolution: Stability AI’s New Model Does WHAT With Photos?! You Won’t Believe It!

Stability AI, a company that’s seen more turbulence than a budget airline, is back with another AI offering: Stable Virtual Camera. The premise? Transform your humdrum 2D images into ‘immersive’ 3D videos. The reality? Well, let’s just say manage your expectations.

Virtual cameras, for those not fluent in CGI jargon, are digital tools used in filmmaking and animation. Stability AI, in its infinite wisdom (or perhaps driven by the desperate need for positive press), decided to throw generative AI into the mix. The result is Stable Virtual Camera, promising greater control and customizability. Whether it delivers is another question.

The model generates ‘novel views’ from up to 32 images, letting users specify camera angles. Think swirling spirals and dramatic dolly zooms, all generated by the cold, unfeeling algorithms. You can create videos in square, portrait, and landscape aspect ratios, up to a staggering 1,000 frames. That’s a lot of frames for something that might look like a fever dream.

Of course, there’s a catch. Several, actually. Stability AI cheerfully admits that the model struggles with humans, animals, and ‘dynamic textures’ like water. So, basically, anything interesting. Expect ‘flickering artifacts’ with complex camera paths or irregularly shaped objects. In other words, if your subject matter deviates from a perfectly still, inanimate cube, prepare for visual chaos.

The research preview is available under a noncommercial license on Hugging Face. Feel free to download it and subject your unsuspecting images to its questionable artistry. Just don’t come crying to us when your cat morphs into a glitching Eldritch horror.

Stability AI’s recent history reads like a Silicon Valley soap opera. Financial woes, staff departures, a failed partnership with Canva, and an ex-CEO who apparently treated the company coffers like his personal piggy bank. The arrival of James Cameron to the board suggests they are not messing about, but there’s only so much that the maker of Titanic can do.

But fear not! There is hope, of a sort. Stability has a new CEO and a newfound determination to churn out AI models. They even teamed up with Arm to bring audio generation to mobile devices. The goal? To infuse your cat videos with realistic (or terrifying) sound effects. The future is…certainly something.

So, is Stable Virtual Camera the next big thing? Probably not. Is it a fascinating glimpse into the potential (and pitfalls) of AI-powered 3D conversion? Possibly. Is it likely to generate more amusement than actual utility? Almost certainly. But hey, at least it’s something to distract us from the impending AI apocalypse.
