Deepfakes in Johor: When AI Meets Adolescent Recklessness
The headlines out of Johor, Malaysia, are a stark reminder of the double-edged sword that is readily accessible AI. A 16-year-old boy is currently under further remand, accused of using deepfake technology to create and disseminate lewd images of his schoolmates and alumni. If true, it paints a grim picture of technological misuse and the potential for devastating consequences.
The alleged modus operandi is unsettlingly simple: the suspect reportedly used AI tools to manipulate photos sourced from social media, selling the doctored images for a measly RM2 (roughly 40 US cents). The scale of the alleged operation seems extensive, with police confirming 29 reports filed against the teen as of mid-April. The school, understandably, took swift action, expelling the student.
The Long Arm of the Law
He isn’t alone in facing legal repercussions. A 19-year-old male is also remanded for six days in connection with the same case. Both are being investigated under Section 7 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. These laws carry significant penalties, reflecting the seriousness with which Malaysian authorities are treating the case.

The potential for harm in cases like this is immense. The victims, some as young as 12 or 13, are subjected to a violation of their privacy and dignity.
