AI Art Just Got a WHOLE Lot Cheaper (and Better!)

The AI art scene is a crowded gallery, overflowing with pretenders and the occasional masterpiece. Now, a new artist has entered the fray, wielding algorithms instead of brushes: Reve Image 1.0, codenamed “Halfmoon.”

And get this: it’s cheap. Like, suspiciously cheap.

Reve Image boasts comparable, and in some cases, superior results to established players like Midjourney, Flux, and Ideogram. The secret sauce? Who knows! The team is shrouded in mystery, the architecture a black box. All we know is that it outputs impressive images.

The pricing model is simple: 100 free credits upon signup, followed by $5 for 500 generations. That’s a penny per image. Your average gumball machine probably costs more to operate. Midjourney’s entry-level plan starts at $8 per month; heavy users can easily rack up $120 monthly bills. Reve also throws in 20 free generations daily, like some kind of digital breadline for aspiring artists.

But what about the art itself? Our hands-on testing revealed some genuinely surprising results. Reve Image excelled at prompt adherence, accurately capturing complex scenes with impressive detail. It also demonstrated a knack for realism and even handled typography with surprising competence. That’s right, AI that can spell. The future is now, folks.

The Tests:

We pitted Reve against the best in the business, focusing on prompt accuracy, realism, and text generation.

  • Round 1: The Journalist’s Office. A meticulously detailed prompt featuring laptops, typewriters, neon signs, and enough hipster paraphernalia to make Wes Anderson blush. Reve Image emerged victorious, besting Freepik Mystic and Ideogram in overall execution. Freepik aced the color grading but flubbed texture and letter placement. Ideogram nailed the glossy surfaces but butchered the text and lacked realism.

  • Round 2: The Horror Illustration. Giant spiders chasing screaming women through jungles. You know, the usual Tuesday afternoon prompt. Reve Image tied with SD3.5, delivering outstanding linework, compelling facial expressions, and a convincing forest environment. Each competitor had strengths – SD3.5’s jungle setting, SDXL’s scale, MidJourney’s atmosphere, and Ideogram’s color choices, but Reve showcased superior detail and artistic flair.

The Catch? Of course, there’s a catch.

Reve Image employs content filtering, meaning certain outputs (nudity, violence) are pixelated. Think of it as AI art with strategically placed fig leaves. This is a “filtered model” which is different than a censored model because it was actually trained on the restricted content, but restricts the outputs on a specific criteria. For the truly uninhibited artist, local installations of models like Flux or SD3.5 remain the go-to option.

Image editing is also a bit…chatty. Instead of traditional in-painting tools, Reve relies on instruction-based editing. You literally talk to the model, describing your desired changes. It’s like having a slightly dimwitted, but ultimately obliging, digital assistant. Novices might find it charming; power users may find it frustrating. While it doesn’t degrade the image like Google’s AI, it can alter the overall aesthetic.

The Verdict:

Reve Image Generator is a compelling newcomer in the AI art arena. Its impressive image quality, prompt adherence, and remarkably low cost make it a serious contender. For users seeking high-quality images without needing a PhD in prompt engineering, Reve offers an accessible and affordable alternative.

But it’s not without its quirks. The lack of traditional editing tools and a mobile app, coupled with the mystery surrounding its creators, may give some users pause.

Still, at a penny per image, Reve Image is worth a look. Just don’t expect it to replace your actual Picasso. Yet.

Disclaimer: We reached out to the Reve team for comment, but they were probably busy generating more masterpieces on the cheap.
